Breakfast with Marie Claire
| January 31, 2012 | Posted by Lizzy under Fun times, Party time! |
Anyone who knows me will tell you that the way to my heart is through food. So Marie Claire definitely played their cards right by feeding me breakfast this morning at their Blog and Twitter Awards. There is nothing like a good breakfast of mini bagels, mini pastries and mini yoghurt to ease the pain of defeat! I was quite confused as to how I made it onto the shortlist in the first place (I’m fairly certain that my Mum was only able to vote once) and although I allowed for a little smidgen of hope I was pretty certain that I wasn’t going to win, so I relaxed and had a lovely morning meeting new people. I hung out with Jenny of The Style PA and Abi Marvel, who were both very welcoming and friendly. Making new friends is definitely the best part of blogging!
Congratulations to the winners!!
Fleur de Force (Best Beauty Blogger)
Karla Powell (Best Beauty Twitter)
The Elgin Avenue (Best Fashion Blog)
Liberty London Girl (Best Fashion Twitter)
I’ve put a few more pictures from the event on my Facebook page. Thank you so much to the team at Marie Claire for organising the event and coordinating the awards. And for feeding me breakfast
.
But most of all, thank you so much to everyone who has supported my little blog by popping by to have a browse, leaving a comment or two and for voting for me in the awards. I never thought I’d ever get shortlisted for anything (except perhaps a mental asylum) so from the bottom of my heart thank you, you lovely lovely people. xxx
The Fixer-Upper, or Why Every Fashionista Should Sew
| January 29, 2012 | Posted by Lizzy under Clothing and accessories, Fashion DIY |
I’ve taken to having the occasional “fixer-upper” project on the go – a tired out garment from my own wardrobe or that I might have foraged out of a charity shop that, with a bit of nipping and tucking, could be wonderful again. Having a few alteration techniques hidden up her perfectly tailored sleeve is a useful trick for any clothes hound.
I found this pastel print dress a few weeks ago looking pretty sad. Long sleeves that tapered to the wrist and puffed up at the shoulder, supported by a stonking pair of shoulder pads. The skirt flared from hip to ankle, with a bodice that was about four sizes too big for anyone. At some point its previous owner had decided that the combination of long skirt, dropped waist and shoulder pads just didn’t have the rad factor any more, and they brought it to the YMCA. Where who should come across it but a PhD student, bored with thesis writing and enjoying a cheeky lunchtime shopping trip. And who had incidentally, just been browsing some fantastic pastel colour spreads in US Harpers Bazaar, and saw the potential of an eclectic pastel pattern for this spring. I took it home, got out my sewing box and got to work.

One hour, two sleeves and some shoulder pads removed, skirt adjusted and waistband moved up, and rad factor was restored. The hem has come out a little uneven, but I’ve decided to refer to it as “asymmetric” (i.e. an intentional design feature) rather than wonky!
I’m sorry I don’t have any “before” photos. But Chris pointed out that if I had taken some then transforming the dress would probably have been a disaster! Next time I start a fixer-upper, I’ll be sure to document it properly. Watch out for this dress in an upcoming outfit post – I have a mint green jumper that is just dying to join in the pastel fun.
Feeling tempted to take on a fixer-upper project? I’d love to hear about your triumphs/failures! x
Matchy matchy

Cream: Office brogues and BHS tights
Crimson: Dorothy Perkins brogues and tights
Electric blue: Pretty Polly tights and Zara pumps
Purple: M&S boots and BHS tights
How do you feel about matching accessories? A bag with a belt, shoes and a scarf, perhaps a hat and a bangle. What about matching shoes and tights? My parents gave me the shiny crimson brogues for Christmas, and as I just so happened to have a pair of crimson tights with me I decided to try them together. I liked the combination so much that I started trying it with other shoe/tight mixtures. Black on black is a standard classic, but I love a splash of bright colour so what about a jazzy purple on purple, electric blue on blue, or perhaps a more spring-like cream on cream? The latter looks great with a pale pink dress and vibrant pastel sweater, an outfit that I tried out during the week to try and brighten up a miserable grey day!
Would you ever match your tights and shoes (or other accessories for that matter)? Or do you scorn matching colours in favour of a wild, wonderful mixture? x
