Meet my nemesis

Trousers – ASOS; sweater and hat  - thrifted; shoes – Accessorize; bag – One Language

My wardrobe is largely made up of dresses and skirts. I own one pair of jeans, which I dislike intensely because the fit is so bad (and has got worse through time), and one pair of trousers (pictured above), which aren’t too bad but are far from perfect. The lack of jeans in my closet is not some kind of snobbish “I don’t let denim *shudders* touch my skin” statement, but because I can so rarely find a pair that fit comfortably. My thighs and hips are bigger than the average size 10/12 bear, and my waist is smaller. Sadly, such Marilyn-esque proportions do not make for an easy trouser wearing life.

The freedom to wear ‘divided skirts’ is just one of the many things that women have had to keep pushing for over the years, so it seems pretty unfair to me that trying to find a satisfactory example of this emancipation staple has become quite such a challenge. Every year, as the temperature drops, I steel myself for the same routine: find jeans online, order jeans, try on jeans, jeans = fail, return, repeat from step one. Or if I have time, trying on pair after pair in store after store until I have a nervous collapse in the Gap changing rooms.

There are so many gorgeous coloured jeans around at the moment that it feels almost sacrilegious to wear traditionally-coloured denim. After a brief browse this morning I have lined up some possible colourful candidates…

Left to right: 1, 2, 3, 4

I’m a skinny jeans and fitted trousers girl, which probably is why I have such a difficult time with finding ones that fit and flatter. But I just can’t bear bootleg cuts, and the eternal lie that they “look good on everyone”. “Everyone” does not apparently include me! I remember the first time I tried on a pair, I thought I looked like a demented matador. Time will tell whether any of these pairs turn out to be all I want them to be!

Have you found a well-fitting pair of jeans? Please let me know, I want to solve my problem once and for all and add new pieces to play with to my wardrobe! x

Cookie Monster

Dress – ASOS; hat and stole – New Look; shoes – Marni, Bang Bang Exchange

How do you dress for work every day? My laboratory is not the shiniest, most sparkly place in the world; in fact I don’t believe that any animal lab is particularly sanitary. Science smells, and also tends to leave sticky residues on most surfaces. Not exactly ideal conditions for a self-confessed clothing addict with a passion for dressing up! But like any addict, a little thing like practicality is not going to derail me. I love to inject a bit of costume fun into my every day outfits. In this particular instance I am choosing to channel the Cookie Monster. Or some Cruella Deville-esque character who has monster-napped the Cookie Monster and turned his pelt into a stylish stole. Who would be so evil as to do that to the Cookie Monster? *Laughs maniacally*

But I digress. I love getting all glammed up for doing ordinary things, there is nothing quite like feeding flies and counting out insect pupae (don’t ask, PhD stuff) while wearing muppet fur. And I managed to wear my various silky, furry fabrics all day without getting a single spill anywhere. Champ. I wasn’t wearing Marni wedges for lab work though; I saved these for a weekend of roving about town!

I’m lucky in that I don’t have any particular work dress code. For those who do, I’d love to hear how you fit your own personality into your working wardrobe!

No actual muppets were harmed (much) in the making of this outfit. (But if you need Grover fur, I know a guy who can hook you up).

Two fabulous girls

Susie of Take-out In Couture, looking amazing in Disco Pony sparkles!

My birthday homegirl Hannah coming over all film noir

I spent my Saturday celebrating different events with two very special people. First up was the leaving party for fellow fashion blogging PhD student (we are definitely a species) and all round wonderful person Susie, of Take-out In Couture. She is leaving London (temporarily we all hope!) to return to St. Andrews to complete her PhD and officially become Dr. Susie. Sherin and Rachel organised a wonderful, multi-venue blogger romp around town featuring afternoon tea, cocktails, circus acts and even a goody bag! I swear these girls could run the universe if they set their minds to it; imagine how glam the world would be as a result. Thank you so much for a wonderful day guys, and thank you Susie for being such a warm, welcoming and all round fabulous person. Good luck in Scotland!

Hannah and I have know each other since University, when we braved a truly horrendous student house (mould, mice and drug barons for neighbours – I kid you not, there was a police raid and everything) and somehow managed to survive. To celebrate her recent birthday we headed out for Turkish food, which was utterly delicious and unexpectedly accompanied by belly dancing. I find belly dancing completely fascinating – I swear the human body shouldn’t be able to gyrate like that! On our way for some post-dinner dancing we paused outside Liverpool Street station and I snapped this picture.

Don’t they both look amazing? I always feel extremely blessed to know such wonderful people! x
