MODO

This will be the first of many picture heavy posts this week; at the aforementioned exciting event last night I managed to take in excess of 1400 photographs! The event in question was ‘The Show’, a fashion show run by MODO, the UCL fashion society. Thanks to the lovely Michaela, co-head of design at MODO and author of Michaela Knits, I was not only present but in a front row seat (thanks Michaela!).

MODO was founded in 2003, with the intention of giving academic students the opportunity to explore their passion for fashion. Among the designers exhibiting at this year’s show were scientists, mathematicians, engineers, medics, liguists, in fact not a single fashion student! Regular visitors to this blog (hi Mum!) may notice that I occasionally dabble in making my own clothes, so seeing the work of other like-minded students was truely inspiring. Over the course of this week I shall attempt to use my excessive quantities of pictures do justice to the quality and beauty of their designs.

The hand-knitted pieces shown in this post are all taken from Michaela’s collection, which was inspired by the natural effects of changing seasons. Her first model, clad in verdent green summery shorts and a green striped cape, scattered tissue leaves across the runway. The pieces that followed were knitted in more autumnal hues, with the details of the patterns becoming looser and more skeletal to evoke the increasing exposure of tree branches as the leaves on them fall. Finally, all that was left were a few leaves left clinging to the model’s body and shoes, before winter arrived in the form of a beautiful ice blue sweater.

All that remains is for me to say an enormous thank you to MODO for a fantastic evening of fashion fun, and also to Michaela for introducing me to the society in the first place. I have enough pictures for at least one post per day throughout this week, so watch this space for more excellent student fashion!

I have been doing my PhD at UCL for 2 years and have only just heard of the society. It’s so amazing to have a group of fashion and crafting minded students around who also happen to be in a similar academic boat! I hope you enjoy the links!
